In my opinion, I think that democracy should be defined as “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.” I think that getting a clear idea of what is going on is of absolute importance as in order to state a solid argument, we need to get aver clear idea of what democracy is about, at least something that convinces ourselves.
The next thing we need to do is probably nothing less than defining the term called stability too. I think that in order for a country to be stable, economic aspects is probably the most important aspect of all as a good and developed economy; it will provide people with higher standard of living which will satisfy people in the country and it will eliminate all revolts of protests against the government. Following up will be political aspects, to achieve political stability; democracy will be the key as the political parties will be fighting for the people’s votes through their policies and representatives, and not by warfare or corruption, this aspect should be stable.
In addition, democracy will also bring social stability and solve the social aspect as the people have a say in the policies of the country and also a right to choose who they want to represent them in the government. When the citizens and people are happy, social ability will be achieve and when people are less likely to revolt if they have a say in choosing the government and its policies.
When these two terms are put together, it will gives everyone an impression that democracy will make a society more stable as the people have an active say and part to play in running the country. People get to choose who they want to run the country and the policies that are carried out. Therefore, there would be less resentment or bad feelings toward the government.
However, I think that democracy may not be able to create stability in a way as democracy allows the “majority” to rule the country due to a voting system and there are times when the difference and margin between the majority and the minority are not very large and the latter ones may cause problems too and a very good example will be in Sri Lanka where the Sinhalese are the majority however the Tamils still contribute to a significant number of people in Sri Lanka. This would mean that there is still a high chance of revolt and riots if the minority feels that they are being neglected, as there are so many of them and they can make a big difference. Because of this, the government would have to then moderate and tread carefully or they might end up inciting riots and violence.
Hence, in conclusion I think that democracy will only create stability in certain countries although it works with most countries but when it is used on countries that do not have a clear margin between majority and minority it may cause problems to it instead.
